Spitalfields Music wins two RPS Music Awards!

Winning two Royal Philharmonic Society Awards made for a busy evening on Tuesday – photos, interviews, collecting prizes! The really special treat though is spending the evening with other winners – Olly Coates, Toby Spence, Claudio Abbado, Maurizio Pollini, Mitzucho Uchida and Jonathan Harvey – and indeed the others who had been shortlisted. Collectively it’s a brilliant celebration of the vitality of classical music in the UK at the moment.

It seems to be rather rare to win two RPS awards in one go and we were really thrilled to have won what we consider to be the most important categories – Learning and Participation and Audiences and Engagement. I guess it’s sometimes hard to know exactly what titles like this mean – for us, it’s simply offering amazing music to as many people as possible.

The two projects that won – We are Shadows, our community opera and Buy One, Donate One, a scheme that ensures we have free tickets to offer to first time attenders from Tower Hamlets – achieve this goal in quite different ways. What’s brilliant about these two projects is that they take in everyone we work with – the rostra of world class artists including composers and workshop leaders, children from our local schools, our volunteer stewards, regular audiences, people attending Festival events for the first time, members of our local communities from all walks of life, our community partners, our staff team as well as trusts, company and individual donors. If any of these groups were not participating these projects would not have happened. The sense of a community of people helping each other is at the centre of our approach and what makes Spitalfields Music rather different.

Congratulations to everyone involved in these projects and everything we do as Spitalfields Music. And if you’re reading this and not already involved, come to our Summer Festival and get involved! There’s room for anyone here.

The annual RPS Music Awards are presented in association with BBC Radio 3’s In Tune programme and are the highest recognition for live classical music in the United Kingdom. They were set up in 1989 to celebrate the outstanding musical achievements of both young and established, British and international, musicians.

Awards, in thirteen categories, were decided by independent panels consisting of some of the music industry’s most distinguished practitioners. The awards honour musicians, composers, writers, broadcasters and inspirational arts organisations.

RPS Music Awards winners were announced on Tuesday 8 May and BBC Radio 3 will be broadcasting a special RPS Music Awards Performance on 3 on Sunday 13 May at 2pm.

In pictures: the award-nominated ‘We are Shadows’

As many of you may have heard, we’ve been fortunate enough to be shortlisted twice(!) for this year’s RPS Music Awards.

In the RPS Music Award for Learning & Participation category is last Summer’s fantastic We are Shadows - our opera project that was two years in the making and involved over 300 participants of all ages from Tower Hamlets.

It’s got us reminiscing about the project and so we thought we’d take the opportunity to share a selection of images captured from along the way. We hope you enjoy!

If you fancy a little bit more, have a look at the We are Shadows videos on our YouTube channel. There’s a great documentary from Andy Weir, and you can enjoy a short film below:

The Anticipation of 2012

Niharika joined us last year as our Marketing & Communications Intern, working on our Winter Festival. As she finished her time with us, she took a moment to tell us about what she’d been up to over the past few months.

2011 was a fabulous year for me because I had the chance to join Spitalfields Music as their Marketing and Communications intern! I’ve learnt loads with the help of an awesome team. I worked at the recent Winter Festival, which was really exciting as I had the chance to take on different roles such as front of house, concert management and box office.  If you haven’t already, check out some of the photos and reviews from our Winter Festival here.

Currently, The Spitalfields Music HQ is buzzing with anticipation about our Summer Festival 2012: the line-up is ready, artist photo shoots are complete, images are being chosen and written material is being proof-read. We have an exciting range of events in our programme featuring early and contemporary music, music theatre, late night after-dinner concerts, walks, talks, free outdoor events and family activities!

Intern Diary: Niharika says ‘Hello’

Hello – Niharika here, the new Marketing and Communications Intern at Spitalfields Music.

It has been four weeks since my first day and am really enjoying it. Spitalfields Music is in a wonderful location – in case the name didn’t give it away already – its HQ resides on the always busy Brushfield Street. It is lovely to work at my desk because I am able to hear live music from the market, and since a lot of restaurants and cafes crowd Spitalfields, the aromas from busy kitchens always waft in.

What we’ve been up to:

We have had the first recruitment session for Women sing East. If you want to join, or are interested in joining our other community choir Spitalfields Singers click here to find out more.

We are also currently working on our Winter Festival, and I wanted to share the new brochure with you:

The brochure has been illustrated by Joanna Moore. You can read more about Joanna, and see some of her unique work here.

Currently, I am working on the Winter Festival 2011 programme book – compiling and collating artists’ information. I love reading about the performers and their work. The line up this year is excellent and I am really looking forward to the festival!
