You may have already noticed an exciting new event slip into the Summer Festival line-up this month! An Alehouse Session is being brought to Spitalfields by early music ensemble Barokksolistene alongside members of I Fagiolini. Barokksolistene describe the music of Alehouse as “folk-songs and melodies played and sung at the time, but also more serious compositions by, among others, Purcell. The menu consists of folky, seducing, touching and sparkling music, accompanied by anecdotes, humour and beer!”
In the late 17th century, when the theatres were closed for religious reasons, many alehouses were turned into so-called Musick-Houses, where musicians gathered to play intimate concerts for an enthusiastic and beer-thirsty audience. An Alehouse Session brings Spitalfields a 21st century take on this phenomenon bringing you humour, anecdote, drinks and glorious music in an informal setting!
We hope to see you there!
An Alehouse Session will take place at the Village Underground on Thursday 23 June at 9.30pm.
