With our Season Launch fast approaching, we asked one of supporters, Gary Hunter, what it’s like being a supporter of Spitalfields Music.
“I am not quite sure how my partner and I first ‘stumbled’ across Spitalfields Music a few years ago, but we are very pleased we did! From a tentative venture to a concert some summers ago, Spitalfields Music has become a mainstay of our London cultural calendar, with its twice-yearly summer and winter festivals eagerly anticipated. For a couple of weeks each June and December, venues across the City fringes offer music lovers a diverse programme of events. Recent highlights for us must include the Orgelbüchlein concert in the Chapel Royal of St Peter ad Vincula at the Tower of London, Handel’s Susanna in the splendour of Hawksmoor’s Christ Church Spitalfields and the slightly more avant-garde collaboration between the Early Opera Company and young dancers in Monteverdi Ballets at Village Underground. But there is so much more and something for everyone – I advise you take a look!
Since joining Spitalfields Music’s supporters group this time last year, we have had the opportunity to come together with other Members and Patrons to participate in equally extraordinary events outside the festival periods. Festival programmes are ‘launched’ several months in advance at an evening when artists and supporters come together to hear about the coming season. Two other recent highlights for us were a fundraising supper in a stunning Huguenot house in the heart of Spitalfields and an evening of history and music at Sandys Row Synagogue.
In addition, our membership has given us the chance to find out more about Spitalfields Music’s learning and participation activities in Tower Hamlets. This is perhaps what makes Spitalfields Music unique and certainly special – its commitment to bringing exceptional music to one of the most deprived areas in London. Working in the community, music is taken out of the concert hall and into schools, old people’s homes and community centres, providing new experiences and enrichment.
For all this to work – and to work with the success it does – Spitalfields Music relies on support from individuals and new supporters are always keenly sought and warmly welcomed. Whether it is simply by buying your first tickets or becoming more involved through various levels of membership, be brave, do as we did a few years back, ‘dip’ inside and join in. You will be very pleased you did!”
