Are you lonesome tonight?
Well, actually, next Wednesday night? In any case you needn’t be as we’re welcoming all hearts, lonely or otherwise, to Village Underground for the latest CLoSer with City of London Sinfonia.
Joining the orchestra are two alluring songstresses: singer/songwriter Mara Carlyle and soprano Elin Manahan Thomas. They’ll be performing a collection of bittersweet songs with a dark Valentine’s twist; from the women of Purcell (including Dido’s Lament) to Lauryn Hill.
To get you in the mood, our friends at City of London Sinfonia have put together an Alternative Love Songs playlist, which you can listen to below. And of course, if you have any favourite dark-hearted ballads, let us know and we’ll add it to our list.
And if you’re unfamiliar with Mara Carlyle’s work, we’ve been enjoying The Devil and Me from her acclaimed album Floreat (see if you can spot the Vaughan Williams sample). Have a listen below.
If you’d like to join us for CLoSer: Alternative Love Songs, tickets are available via our website.
