Couperin’s Leçons des ténèbres was a remarkable piece for its time. It combined the drama of the opera house with sacred devotional texts heard in church. Originally performed in a candlelit Parisian abbey, as the music unfolded, lights were gradually extinguished until darkness submerged the building.
This summer Associate Artist La Nuova Musica share this mixture of the dramatic and the devotional with sopranos Lucy Crowe and Elizabeth Watts in the intimate surroundings of Village Underground, interspersed with trios by Sebastien de Brossard.
We’ve put together a playlist of some of what you’ll hear, so have a listen and come and experience the meeting of intimacy and drama.
